5 Budget Friendly Secrets to Make Your Home Look More Expensive

Even on a budget you deserve to have a space you love! Making your home look more expensive doesn’t have to cost a fortune! These are 5 easy ways to make your home look more high-end that are very budget friendly.

By changing out some inexpensive details and making small adjustments you can make your home look more luxurious and inviting.

Take your home to the next level with these tips for a more expensive looking home on a budget!

1) Hang Curtains High & Wide

Hanging curtains the proper way is one instant way to make your home look more luxurious. Aim to attach rods higher up on the wall and wide enough that your inner edges of the curtains kiss the outer edges of the window. This will create the illusion of a more open space and bigger windows.

Here, I was a tad limited how wide I could hang my curtains because the window was so close to a wall, but even still. This easy trick draws the eye upward and makes the ceilings look taller and the window look bigger creating a richer, more open looking room.

2) Update Vent Covers

Nothing dates a home like years of gunk and rusting on old metal vent covers. (Ick!) Updating your return air covers is a very inexpensive, immediate update to make your home look richer and newer. Plus, I’m convinced it helps the air quality, too.

3) Opt for Paintable Outlet Covers

Got faded yellowing outlet covers? Spruce them up with a paintable option that will even cover the outlet itself. I know mine were a little icky looking, but these paintable outlet covers create a seamless look.

For less than $3 per plate cover, your home can be one step closer to looking and feeling more expensive.

4) Size Up Your Pillow Inserts

Did you know that the recommended proper pillow insert size is actually one size bigger than the cover itself? I didn’t until purchasing my pillows from Danielle Oakey Pillow Shop. She is the pillow expert, after all, and recommends inserts one size larger.

For example, a 20 x 20 pillow cover will need a 22 x 22 insert. You’ll notice a big difference in how fluffy and inviting they look.

Also, opting for a quality insert with high chopability (yes, I made up that word) will create a space that looks more expensive and cozy feeling.

Throughout my entire home I’ve been purchasing these pillow inserts from Amazon. They are pretty affordable at only $21 per pillow and feel SO high quality. Can you appreciate that crisp chop?! Yes, please!

5) Update Door Knobs

If you love the builder grade brass knobs then I hope this doesn’t offend you… but I think they look tacky. In my personal opinion they make your home look cheap and dated.

A super simple and inexpensive solution is to spray paint your existing door hardware! Talk about little cost for BIG richer house impact, this just required a bottle of spray paint.

If you have it in the budget to purchase new door knobs to replace your outdated knobs, then I say go for it! I plan to do this at a later date. (Big Impact Door Knob Update post coming soon…) It will add charm and instantly elevate your space. However, if you’re interested in a more budget friendly approach you can always spray paint your existing door knobs. Check out my post on How to Spray Paint Outdated Door Knobs.

There are countless ways to make your home look more expensive, but these are some of my favorite & some of the easiest. You don’t have to spend a fortune to create a high-end looking house.

Tell me down in the comments, which ones will you try first?

They really do! & don’t involve a full weekend project, either. Thanks for reading

  3. I started following after you had refinished the dresser which you painted green ……I own that same piece of furniture and desperately want to paint it! Is there any way for me to be able to get the info re: the steps you used?

Mary thanks so much for being here & the kind comment! I’m actually working on a post for that same dresser! How ironic. (I assume it was the army green one with the new base?) it should be posted at the end of this month 🙂

  4. “choppability”, love it.

Hehe! Should be a word, right?

  5. […] There you have it, my no demo door trim update! It’s not only more budget friendly and more sustainable than all new trim, but also requires way less work. I think it creates an illusion of taller ceilings and wider doors, similar to how hanging drapes high and wide makes a room feel bigger. (I talk more about this in my 5 Budget Friendly Ways to Make Your Home Look More Expensive post). […]
