Valentine’s Decorating Ideas that Aren’t Cheesy

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Does anyone else find it hard to decorate for Valentines day? I’m sorry, I’m just not into the pink and red hearts or cheesy heart banners so I usually skip the holiday decorations all together.

Last year Kevin and I didn’t even acknowledge the “special day”, if that tells you anything about how NOT into Valentine’s Day we are. But this year I was determined to find some decor that was more sophisticated and versatile so we can still embrace the cute hallmark holiday… but without all the heart shaped everything.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some valentine’s decorations that aren’t cheesy to give your home a fresh look, but with a more romantic take. These creative ideas are easy ways to still partake in the Valentine’s Day decorations, but in a more mature and tasteful way.

Valentines decorations that aren’t cheesy

Florals

Florals are a perfect way to freshen up your home for any season, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Instead of the usual bouquet of red roses, opt for a more subtle and sophisticated arrangement. Consider a mix of blush pink peonies, ivory ranunculus, and muted greenery. Or even better… check out some of these beautiful faux flowers in the link below (your secret is safe with me ;)) A bouquet of flowers on the dining table just feels romantic, even if they are fake!

Vintage vases

Place your pretty florals in elegant vases or vintage-inspired containers for an added touch of charm. Valentines day is the perfect time to bring out the grandma-esque vases and pottery. Thrift shops and FBMarket are great places to find these grandmillenial style items.

Tablecloths, runners & napkins

Another great way to add a little lovey-dovey flair to your decor is a table runner or tablecloth. Instead of heart shape patterns, however, think more country chic with toile or a little lacy action. You could go all out with Valentine’s day tablescapes… but maybe only if you are hosting a Galentine’s day party or home date night.

Bathroom linens

Using floral bathroom towels for Valentine’s Day decor is a practical and super easy way to introduce a festive feel where you tinkle. It’s a temporary and reversible way to decorate for special occasions, esp those like Valentine’s day that are a short season.

Display grandparent’s photos

Pick one of your favorite photo of your parents or grand parents together and display it in a cute thrifted frame. This is a sweet way to celebrate a real life love story and also add to an authentic vintage look (I guess, depending on how old your grandparents are)

Hang a wreath

Wreaths are such a non-committal way to acknowledge a holiday, and personally one of my favorite ways. Slap a wreath on the front door and call it done. There are some really cute red and pink floral wreaths out there for purchase, or tackle it as a simple DIY project

Change out pillow covers

Changing out your pillow covers is another fun way to add in a little valentine’s flare that can also transition beautifully into spring. Think simple pink buffalo checks, florals, or toile fabrics to keep it classy.

Pink and red thrifted books

Simply adding in some classic colors of valentines day will give you a festive feel. Check out the thrift stores (or even just shop your home) for pink and red colored books. You could easily display these on a coffee table with a few taper candles or on open shelves, if you have them.

Heart shaped plates & boards

I wouldn’t go over the top with Valentine’s specific tableware, but a small collection of dessert plates wouuuuuld be pretty cute.

PATTERNS TO SHOP FOR THIS VALENTINE’S DAY…

Red and Pink Toile Patterns

Toile patterns offer a classic and refined aesthetic that can be incorporated seamlessly into Valentine’s Day decor. Choose red and pink toile patterns for items like tablecloths, pillowcases, or curtains. These patterns often depict scenic motifs, providing a touch of sophistication. Consider a table runner with a delicate toile pattern to elevate your dining area, creating a romantic setting for a special Valentine’s Day dinner.

Lace Accents

Lace adds a touch of delicacy and romance to any setting. Incorporate lace items such as table runners, placemats, or linens. Avoid going overboard, just add enough to give the a delicate touch. The intricate patterns of lace add texture create an atmosphere of elegance and looks oh so refined when done tastefully.

Scalloped Details

I don’t know why, but the rounded look of scalloped edges on tableware, baskets and linens give such a dainty look. Adding anything scalloped to your Valentine’s day decor is a great way to soft the look of your home and give off a sweet, tender feel.

Red Chinoiserie Patterns

Chinoiserie patterns, inspired by traditional Chinese art, bring a touch of exotic charm to your Valentine’s Day decor. Opt for pink or red chinoiserie patterned items like throw pillows, towels, or napkins. These pieces can be strategically placed to add pops of color and unique patterns to your space. The combination of pink hues and chinoiserie designs creates a visually stunning and sophisticated look that sets the mood for a romantic celebration.

Pink Gingham

Pink buffalo plaid and checks are beautiful patterns to decorate with for Valentine’s Day decor. The dainty take of this traditional plaid is an easy way to add a festive and cozy touch to any room.
